Industrial School?

I just indexed a ship in the 1871 census that stated it was part of the Industrial Schools Act of 1866. There was a captain, his sons (9 and 9mo, respectively) and then about 12 boys ranging in age from 12-15. I had to look it up and it turns out there were a bunch of "schools" set up like this where orphans, neglected kids and others were sent to get an education and learn a trade.

Huh. Interesting. I love indexing.

Shiloh ward indexed our 500,000th name.

By my calculations, that's about 8,334 hours of work which is day and night for almost an entire year. (347 days). Go us. I couldn't be happier. It's even more amazing when people work so hard in the busiest month of the year. Merry Christmas to ME!

As for other milestones, NEIL J indexed his 50,000th name this month. (I did, too) And he arbitrated his 25,000th. WOW.

We have a couple new indexers: Karen P (the busiest of the busy) and Eric M. The M family is so good at contributing. Sandy S is new and has jumped right in as well. Shawn K just started last month as well and it's fun to watch him go. Some people really get the bug. I love it.

Conference weekend was good to us!

For the record, we did do better last month than I originally stated. We ended up indexing 50,422 names and arbitrating 16702! That might be a ward record - I'll have to check. Definitely a record for HOW MANY people indexed. We're only getting stronger!

As for April - this WILL be a record breaking month. We already have 18,776 indexed and 4769 arbitrated. Whoa. In four days. Miraculous. I started saturday morning and couldn't stop. Jaymeson even indexed about 1,000 names and he's not a fan! The Spirit of Elijah was working overtime.

Interesting Tip from FamilySearch

Alias Names or Using "Or" to Separate Names

An alias is an assumed or additional name. AKA means “also known as” and indicates another name by which the person was known. Sometimes, the clerk might have used quotes or parentheses to indicate an alias or other name. To index a name that has one or more aliases or uses an AKA, type the word or between each name.

For example, if an individual’s name is listed as Joseph Broski AKA Joseph Browzowski AKA Jozef Brzozowski, you would type:
Given Name: Joseph or Jozef
Surname: Broski or Brozowski or Brzozowski

When the clerk appeared to have used quotes or parentheses to indicate an alias or other name, use the word "or" between the names, and type only the names.
For example, if the clerk wrote a name as John "Buck" Harrison, you would type:
Given Name: John or Buck
Surname: Harrison

The word "or" can also be used when two different names are given on a document, and you cannot determine which name is correct. For example, if the given name was written as Mary in one place on the document and as Marion in another place, both names, separated by "or," would be typed in the given name field.

"Walter S. Gifford is the president of some (company, i'm assuming) that i can't read. He is divorced with two sons and lives on East 65th Street in New York City in a house valued at $100,000. He has a governess, a cook, a laundress, a butler, whose name is David A. Arvidson--quite a combination--and the butler's wife, Ebba C. Arvidson, who is also the maid. They only just got married, apparently, since they are still the ages they were at their first marriage.
--i looked him up (on Google, of course). i'm pretty sure this has to be the same guy. Walter S. Gifford He was president of AT&T 1925-1948.
Anyway, it's kind of cool to find someone when you index and then be able to find something out about him.
His neighbor, stockbroker Benson B. Sloan, whose house is valued at $200,000, has a foot man who just came over from Scotland, and his name is Joseph Smith.
Harry B. Goldsmith is not a goldsmith, but I'm hard put to tell what he is. A manager of silks? A mudger of silks? A mayor of silks? something to do with silks. He lives on the same street, his house is valued at $100,000 and he has two cooks, a governess, two waitresses, two chambermaids, a parlormaid, a lady's maid and two kitchen maids, and they come from all over Europe--Finland, Sweden, Norway, Czechoslovakia, Luxembourg, Germany, Scotland, England and Ireland. They problem have some serious issues with name confusion--Bertha Caro, Karin Osners, Ewa Kari, and Kare Nelson, all in the same house.
Wilbur Ward is fairly well off, even for a doctor--the occupation field says "physician". His house is valued at $165,000, but they only have two servants, a cook and a butler, both from Japan.

On the other end of town, where the rent runs between $58 and $110, there are two Hazel Browns on the same street, apparently no relation. There are also several men who work in a "loft building"--I'm assuming that's a skyscraper. Two of them are elevator operators. There is also a family, the Guy family, with two sons, Dennis and Harold, and four daughters named Lilliam, Violet, Daisy and Rosetta. I'm assuming the next girl will be Petunia. Or perhaps Marigold."

Utah Death Registers

These are my favorite so far! The causes of death are fascinating! I'm grateful to live in a time when premature babies live and people don't die of "chronic indigestion". The first one I did had a bunch of men who died in a mining explosion and so I googled it and found this: Scofield Mine Disaster in 1900 Was Utah's Worst Wow. It's a wonder that I dod anything else but this. Too fun. Look for them in the "intermediate" group.

Also, on a sad and awful note I found this as the cause of an infant's death: "Mother's overwork=premature birth/death". Poor mom. I bet the coroner told her that, too.

Please keep little Abbie in your prayers. She is in the hospital waiting to have a seizure so they can monitor it and see who what when where why. She's been there since Sunday and they have threatened to keep her over Christmas if it doesn't happen soon. It's time for an end of the year no-holds-barred contest. I laid awake many night trying to think of a fair contest - you know, since Primary and YW always kills everyone. So I thought of a brilliant idea of having RS v Priesthood and YW v Primary because we're always so close. But then Peggy came along! I don't know what to tell Priesthood. Good luck?

Anyway, The winners of each contest will have treats brought to them from the unwinners on the 2nd Sunday in January. (Not Fast Sunday, that would be sad). It is important for the Priesthood to understand that should they lose, they cannot ask a member of one of the other auxiliaries to make/buy their treats for them. It's hardly a prize for RS if they make their own treats. Not that any of you would have done that. Right?

So, it starts TODAY and ends at MIDNIGHT New Years Eve.

And they beat us ALL!! Peggy J. just started indexing on the 19th and came in 4th place overall this month by doing 3250 names. Uh oh. We're all in trouble. Except RS, I guess. They're in the opposite of trouble. Great Job, Peggy!!

We did an amazing job in November. I had my doubts and I'm sorry. You really pulled it off! Even "indexing elbow" got back into the action.

Our ultimate total is 186,311! That's much closer than I thought we'd be. I think we can actually do this! Only 13,689 to go to reach our 200,000 goal! That's only 456 names a day. We can do that. Especially with our new CONTEST.

Spookiest Indexing Ponderings thus Far...

I have indexed about 16,000 names. I don't say that to boast (obviously) but only to give credibility to my ponderings. In those 16,000ish names, I have had maybe 25 divorces. I used to think, "Wow. People were really committed to their marriages back then." But the more I have done, the more I have seen a frightening trend... very few divorces but MANY, MANY widows and widowers... coincidence? Or did they have other means of solving their marital strife?

And not because of Halloween. It's because we have done less than half this month what we did last month. Why? No throw-down from the YW? (Hope you enjoyed your cookies, Primary... all 85 of you). Conference and Stake Conference? Why can't we all just be more like the Burchetts? Poor Robin with her "indexer's elbow". Keep her in your prayers since she's keeping RS afloat. I'm working up plans to have another indexing party perhaps on Thurs, Nov. 18 at my house. It was super fun last time and we all learned a lot - not to mention indexed more than 1,000 names. mark your calendars - in pencil.

Hello my precious indexers, I hope you all had a fabulous summer. Seems that most of us (myself included) took a nice break from indexing and we should all be refreshed and ready to go!

FYI, we have a total of 113,151 names done for our ward. To put that in perspective, the next best ward in our stake has 59,000. Way to go. Amy Gladden will likely see 25,000 names alone in the upcoming months.

Please make sure you have updated your account to the new LDS.ORG accounts by WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 1! Everyone who doesn't do it will lose the names they have done and have to start at zero AND will still have to get an LDS.ORG account. Better to do it before then and keep your names. If you hold a temple recommend, your membership record number should be on it. I just want to again bear my testimony of this work. It is amazing to be a part of this giant act of service that we are giving to the world - members or not. I love that on busy days where I feel I don't have what it takes to go out and do amazing acts of service, I can still do something on my own time from my home. There is a neat spirit that can be felt while doing this. This feels like "End of Days" work and it's exciting to witness the gathering process.

THis morning I checked our stats and we are at 91,211. That means we did 2,999 names YESTERDAY. Can you believe it? Keep it up and we'll make our goal!!

Did you all feel just a little proud of yourselves during Nelson's talk about genealogy and familysearch? I had my laptop on my lap with indexing open, so I gave myself a little high-five. I told you guys this was a great work we were doing!!
